In Bajo Aragon
you can find a very peculiar cultural and architectural route on the way of keeping fresh food along the years. We can get to know more about cold vaults or ancient “refrigerators” in Alcaniz, Belmonte de San Jose, Calanda, Cañada de Verich, Ginebrosa, La Mata de los Olmos and Valdealgorfa
.All these buildings, dated back of the 16th and 17th
centuries, were designed to store snow during the winter. It was then turned into ice, as a very popular solution at the time.
Each of the vaults are focused on an issue related to the snow and cold, with its own exhibition room consisting of listening activities, multimedia files, screens, or duplicated tools, for visitors to find out, through a self-guided tour, how to build a roof, how to store the snow, the technique by which it becomes ice, and its uses.
