Ruta del Tambor y el Bombo – Drum & Brass Drums Route

This route was developed in 1970 in order to enhance the rich cultural heritage of Holy Week in Teruel, and especially in Bajo Aragon region. Although it started in Andorra, Hijar, Calanda and Alcaniz, other localities such as Samper de Calanda, La Puebla de Hijar, Gaén Urrea, Alcorisa and Albalate del Arzobispo soon merged. All these places have in common the sound of drums and brass drums, a thundering soundtrack for each of the religious ceremonies that are held to commemorate Christ’s Passion and Death. As national public holidays, Holy Week is thought to be the best moment to know this route: however, given the cultural heritage in its nine villages it should be highly recommendable at any time of year. The theme centers in Alcorisa, Samper de Calanda and La Puebla de Hijar are very remarkable when talking about this festivity. There you will know the floats and imagery called pasos, the typical life-like wooden sculptures in Holy Week processions. You can admire the colorful clothes -which vary according to the lay brotherhood or cofradía- and get to know this route and Bajo Aragon cultural background in depth.

You can also take part in an annual Holy Week meeting held in rotation among the nine original populations known asJornadas de Exaltación. The drummers share the instruments, the costumes, and the new rhythms, as a prelude to Holy Week traditions.
