Pinares of Rodeno – A Protected Cluster Pine Tree Landscape
One of the most distinctive natural environments in Spain is this particular combination of geology, geomorphology, flora and fauna making up this pine tree Protected Landscape. The reddish sandstone lands reaching Albarracin, Gea de Albarracin and Bezas are extremely striking. Climate variations inSierra de Albarracín cause whimsical sandstone forms in the substrate as cliffs, towers, large blocks which are often broken by faults and a long list of geological formations. Large areas have been colonized by cluster pines (Pinus pinaster), the main element of this landscape. The trees do occasionally grow creating landscapes even inside the cracked rocks. This Protected Landscape serves as natural habitat for many endangered animal species. Real birdwatchers will probably discover the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) or even a pair of Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). Although they can be difficult to spot if you are not with an expert, you can also come across a Spanish Ibex (Capreolus capreolus) or a deer (Cervus elaphus) when you have simply gone for a walk. The environmental quality is an added value to the vast cultural heritage preserved for centuries by human hands. The best example is the Cave Paintings -World Heritage Site by UNESCO, hidden in many rock shelters. The exploitation of maritime pine resin and its economic impact a few decades ago also left an important legacy, which can still be seen in the pine forests of Albarracin and Bezas. In the tourist center in Dornaque, which is an old forest house located between Bezas and Albarracin, you will get all the key points to enjoy the environmental and cultural values hidden in this landscape.
