Festivals & Traditions

Teruel still keeps some traditions and celebrations as a part of its cultural heritage. Moreover, it should be a privilege for you to re-discover these customs that have now been forgotten in other regions of the country. You should take part in celebrations such as Los Mayos in Sierra de Albarracín -to welcome the spring with dances and songs and where the local boys compete for inspiring love in the young women-, the carnivals in Jiloca or Matarraña, the numerous pilgrimages or La Encamisada in Estercuel or Sanantonada –gratitude to Saint Anton for his protection to the villagers and their domestic animals-. All of them, as a whole, celebrate the end of the winter and welcome the spring.

Furthermore, historical recreations, festivals and cultural celebrations commemorating outstanding facts in history take place in many locations. So the whole province is full of medieval markets, festivities reminding our Iberian, Roman and Arabic ancestors inhabiting these lands, the Lovers of Teruel story staged in the streets the city of Teruel as Las Bodas de Isabel de Segura, or a mix of cultural events in a festival known as Poplum. The association Cultura Popular de Aragón is responsible for recovering historical passages and popular legends of this region.
